Selling out completely.
I always disliked the notion of sell-outs. Did you ever idolize the member of band, an artist, or actor for how great they were later to find out that they abandoned much of what they were originally so famous for? Perhaps they just left the band, the ministry, or the group. “What a sell-out!” you may have said to yourself. But, isn’t this what happens in the process of committing to the cause of Christ?
In a paradigmatic shift, I realized that a person who sells out, has a complete shift of values. Something, like a rock, comes crashing into their world that they realize deserves first place above all else. This rock is more precious above all others and is therefore the most valuable. Obviously, this is going to change thoughts, decision making, and habits. My view is now changed on disliking sell-outs. I love seeing people that become so passionately sold out for a worthy cause. When the rock of ages comes into your life do you sell out for Him?
Are you 100% sold out for Jesus? Has he become the standard to which your thoughts, decisions, and habits are aligned to?
Reflect on these texts:
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
2 Chronicles 19:9
Then he charged them saying, "Thus you shall do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully and wholeheartedly."
Matthew 21: 42-44
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
This is from the Lord,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’
Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.”
Write out how God spoke to you through these passages in your journal.
- Take a few moments to think of what holds first place in your life? By what standards and with what motives are you making your decisions? Now ask yourself, are Jesus and His principles in line with these?
- Write down those things which currently hold first place in your life. What would have to change for this to radically shift?
- I challenge you to confess and be authentic with God about what is taking first place in your life.
